Via America’s Lawyer: Bloggers allege that Vox.com improperly classified them as independent contractors instead of actual employees, which allowed the company to pay them as little as $3 for every article that they wrote. Mike Papantonio explains.

Transcript:

A major weight theft class action lawsuit has been given a green light by a federal judge. The suit’s being brought by sports bloggers against online media, the giant, actually, Vox.com. The bloggers allege that the company improperly classified them as independent contractors instead of actual employees, which allowed the company to pay them as little as $3 for every article that they wrote. Not surprisingly, the high level executives at Vox that made the decision to reclassify these workers were accused of doing exactly the same thing to writers when they were executives at AOL.

There’s a clear pattern emerging with these executives. What happens at Vox is happening all over the country. Misclassifying employees as contractors allows employers to get away with not paying overtime. They can pay below minimum wage, and not providing benefits. Hopefully this lawsuit will help curb the growing problem of wage theft in the United States.
