Via America’s Lawyer: Mike Papantonio highlights a case that blames Hillshire Co. for the death of Mark Lopez who died from mesothelioma cancer.

Finally tonight some good news. A civil jury has ordered the Hillshire Brands Company to pay $13 million to the family of a man who died from asbestos mesothelioma. Mark Lopez died at the age of 61 after developing mesothelioma cancer. The lawsuit states Lopez lived in an employee housing unit owned by the Hillshire Company. The complaint also said that Hillshire dumped, dumped, asbestos into areas where children like Mark played everyday and have done so over decades and it did so without any kind of warning to the people what they’re coming in contact with.
The hazards from asbestos were well known to the industrial, the scientific and medical community when Mark Lopez was born. It was also known shortly after that asbestos could cause mesothelioma cancer. Knowing this, it is remarkable that Hillshire tried to argue that Lopez’s death was the result of his own fault, his own negligence, but that’s what they argued in court. In the same way Hillshire failed to adequately protect employees, they also failed to protect the community around their business. It was always all about profits for Hillshire. But at least in this case, justice trumps profits.
