Kellyanne Conway, the leader of Donald Trump’s opioid commission, proved once again this week that she has no business leading the charge against one of the largest public health crises in modern history. In a forum with college students, Kellyanne told the crowd that they need to just splurge on ice cream or French fries instead of buying drugs on the street corners. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.

White House advisor and leader of Donald Trump’s Opioid Epidemic Response Team, I guess you could call it, Kellyanne Conway, gave a speech this week at Generation Next, a gathering of millennials and college students where she explained how kids can stay away from these dangerous opioids. Here is exactly what Kellyanne said, here’s her quote.

On our college campuses, you folks are reading the labels, they won’t put any sugar in their body, they won’t eat carbs anymore and they’re very, very fastidious about what goes into their body and then you buy a street drug for $5 or $10 that’s laced with Fentanyl and that’s it. My short advice is, this is still from Kellyanne Conway, eat the ice cream, have the french fry, don’t buy the street drug. Believe me, it all works out.

So, to keep kids from getting addicted to drugs, Kellyanne Conway says, just have some ice cream, just go have some french fries. Hugs not drugs, right? I mean, this just seems like it reeks of the 1980’s failed Just Say No policy on drugs but, it also shows that Kellyanne Conway is neither smart enough to be handling the opioid epidemic for the United States and two, that this entire Administration has no idea what the opioid epidemic is really about. It’s not about people going and buying drugs from a guy on a street corner for $5 or $10, it’s about corporate drug pushers from Big Pharma convincing doctors to write more prescriptions for opiates so that people can get addicted. Not in spite of the fact that people get addicted but so that people can get addicted. The documents, what’s been uncovered in some of these opioid cases, make it very clear.

These distributors and these drug companies absolutely knew that people were getting addicted to their opiate pain killers and that is why they wanted doctors to increase the prescriptions, get more people hooked, make more money for Big Pharma. This has nothing to do with people choosing prescription opioids over ice cream or french fries. This has everything to do with corporate greed coming from Big Pharma and Kellyanne Conway doesn’t seem to understand that. More than 100 people, every single day in this country are dying from overdosing on opioids and roughly half of those are prescription opioids yet with Donald Trump’s new opioid action plan and Kellyanne Conway’s idiotic statements here, it shows that they think that this problem is 100% guys standing on a street corner in trench coats selling drugs to people who don’t know any better. No. This is doctors writing prescriptions at the advice of Big Pharma. All the ice cream and all the french fries in the world, Kellyanne, are not going to solve that problem. And to be honest, neither are you.
