As his time in office winds down – President Obama is starting to focus on legacy issues. One of them is global warming. Of all the presidents in American history – President Obama has arguably done the most to fight global warming. Among other things – he’s put in place the Clean Power Plan – helped negotiate the Paris Climate Deal – and after some prodding by activists – rejected the Keystone XL pipeline. These are all good things – which makes his recent decision to expand offshore drilling in the Arctic all the more distressing – especially given the findings in a new report from Greenpeace. That report has found that the Obama administration’s offshore drilling plan would “lead to a net increase in global carbon emissions of about 850 million metric tons of carbon dioxide… equivalent to the annual emissions of 3.6 million passenger vehicles over fifty years.”
