Pope Francis, who has established himself as the most progressive pope in recent history, has called upon Catholics to recognize and act against climate change, reported the National Post.

Because Republican politicians always use religion as their basis for everything from economic policy to climate change, the Pope’s announcement will surely be resounding through the religious community, noted the National Post. Although it won’t be prompt a complete turn around, as Republicans will surely ignore climate change further, Pope Francis’ announcement is a huge step forward.

The National Post noted that climate change is a scientific issue, but conservative politicians treat it like a religious, ideological issue. And because Republicans hide behind religion on the issue, they don’t believe that there is a controllable human element.

“Just as humanity confronted revolutionary change in the 19th century at the time of industrialization, today we have changed the natural environment so much,” said Bishop Marcelo Sorondo, chancellor of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences. “If current trends continue, the century will witness unprecedented climate change and destruction of the ecosystem with tragic consequences.”

The Pope’s recognition and willingness to address climate change is a huge and important cornerstone in the fight against climate change. However, it’s unlikely that it will prompt something revolutionary. It seems the only group that will give any pushback would be American Republicans.
